Being a complete art novice with no formal artistic training whatsoever, Theatre Revolve has provided a medium and a space for me to satisfy my curiosities about art. It has given me an outlet and a strong foundation on which to build upon. Theatre Revolve has revived the suffocating artist that was once me.

Sprockets Seeks Young Film Jurors

MONDAY NOVEMBER 17, 2008

The Sprockets International Film Festival for Children is accepting applications from young film buffs to be jurors in the next edition of the festival, coming up from April 18 - 24, 2009 in Toronto. To choose the members of the Young People's Juries, Sprockets is inviting kids aged 8-12 to submit a 100-200 word review of their favourite film before Friday February 27. Winners will get free admission to the movies their jury needs to watch, plus snacks and a gift bag. But there are responsibilities too, including attending all of their assigned films so they can make a fair decision as a group and representing Sprockets to the media.

Learn more about the festival at Sprockets.ca or go straight to the Sprockets Jury page for all the details on the contest.

Design a New Dora

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2008

Do you feel a connection to the stage but also have a knack for more stationary three-dimensional art? The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts launched a competition earlier this month to design a new statue for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards. You have to be an Ontario resident who is eighteen years of age or older and you will have to be pay a submission fee - on the other hand, the winner gets $2000.*

Obviously there are a lot of practical criteria that have to be met - ranging from production cost and portability to leaving a space for the winning-name plaque. But artistically speaking, TAPA has only outlined two criteria - judges will be looking for something that "reflects excellence in Toronto’s theatre, dance and opera community" and "embodies the spirit of Dora".

The previous design was a harlequin figure, as seen in Rick Miller's hand on this news page from WYRD Productions (um, the Dora would be the thing in his left hand). If you've got an idea as good or better, you've got until January 12th to get your submission package in.
  • Visit the Dora Award Contest page on tapa.ca for all the details, including the complete fine print (*what's mentioned here is just a small-print snippet. Read all rules carefully)

Upcoming OAC Deadlines

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15, 2008

It's mid-November which means it's getting close to last minute territory for Ontario Arts Council grants with a December 1st deadline. Visit the website of the O.A.C. A.S.A.P. if you think might be interested in and eligible for the grants for:
  • Emerging Visual Artists

  • Popular Music (songwriters/composers)

  • Word of Mouth (storytelling, spoken word etc)

  • Chalmers Professional Development (study, internship, apprenticeship, mentorship)

  • Or the French-only program Création littéraire
And don't be too quick to dismiss the possibility of getting a grant even if you're still in the very early stages of your career. While you have to be able to demonstrate that you're serious about your work, the "emerging artist" categories of many granting programs are generally designed to give the benefit of the doubt. So why not give it a shot?
